My 9-11 Memories

Already ten years have passed. Time to share some memories, before they fade away …

I remember 9-11 as a cristal clear fall day. I had moved from Manhattan to Germany just two months ago. I was incredibly lucky, as I lived right downtown in the extended area that was cordoned off.

When I got the call, I was just returning from the IAA the world’s largest automotive show and was steps away from the bank building where I work. At first I did not understand what my friend was trying to tell me and I did not grasp the enormity of it. But when I entered the bank there were hushed groups of staff everywhere, watching TV as it all unfolded.

In the trading room, staff was listening to good bye calls from people trapped in the twin towers. Heartwrenching.

What touched me most, are two things:

1. It all goes well, until it goes wrong. No one had been able to even imagine this. And this applies to everything from a very large to a very small day-to-day life scale. This won’t happen again, because now we are prepared. But something else will and we will be equally unprepared no matter how hard we try. So I would urge everyone to do your best, but not let yourself be trapped by fear.

2. How in a city that is facetiously known for “people being able to die in the street without anyone caring” all of a sudden everyone banded together and helped each other out. Why is it that humans only seem to be able to care about each other in emergencies. I wish we all would take better care of each other and truly “see” each other in real life, too.

This week, in memory of 9-11, I would like you to remember the spirit of banding together and helping each other and carry it into your daily life. Look at people for who they are, not for what they represent to you. See their needs – emotional and physical. Reach a helping hand to those who need it.

Have a caring week,
Anna.
